Stars shine at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday

There were plenty of F1 stars present on Saturday

The penultimate day of the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed went up another level on Saturday, as motorsport's stars took to the hillclimb once again.

The day started dry, although a thunderstorm arrived late on in the afternoon, and there were several celebrations of different eras and moments.

Niki Lauda was celebrated, and so was Audi's presence in motorsport. A whole batch was dedicated to Audi, including Le Mans cars such as the Audi R8C that took part in the 1999 Le Mans 24 Hours.

That car was being driven by Dindo Capello and speaking to The Pit Stop, he explained that driving the car for the very first time provided a real surprise.

"It's a great event, but for me what is really amazing, every time you come to the new edition of Festival of Speed, there is something new and some new emotion.

"Even for a driver like me that has been in this world since 45 years, every time I was coming here and I will come here, it will always be a new emotion.

"I'm driving the R8C, which is a car I never drove before because I was driving at the same time an R8R. And therefore, I never had the chance to drive the R8C and the Festival of Speed 2024 for me is the very first time I'm driving that car.

"I have to say, it is completely different from the R8R. We always thought it was just one with the roof and one was a roadster, but actually the driveability is completely different.

"To be honest, I never paid so much attention to that car, but if I look at the car now, I think it was a really beautiful car."

It wasn't just the Le Mans cars that were featuring heavily on Saturday though. Oliver Bearman took to the hill driving a Ferrari Formula 1 car, and there was a special moment for Gil de Ferran who sadly passed away in December 2023.

That moment was marked by de Ferran's good friend Dario Franchitti, and the de Ferran family.

The timed shootout also begun in earnest on Saturday, and it was Romain Dumas who set the pace in the Ford Supervan. He set a time of 45 seconds, to beat Scott Speed's Subaru WRX: Project Midnight be a mere tenth of a second.

The final shootout concludes on Sunday afternoon, on what will be the final day of the 2024 edition of the Festival of Speed.
